MBBS Admission in Karnataka 2026 — Complete Guide: KEA Counselling, Fees & College List

Introduction:

MBBS admission in Karnataka 2026 is based on NEET UG scores. Candidates who qualify the NEET exam and meet the eligibility criteria prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) can apply for admission to government and private medical colleges in Karnataka. The admission process is conducted through KEA MBBS Counselling, where seats are allotted according to NEET rank, reservation rules, and seat availability.

Karnataka offers MBBS admission in both government and private medical colleges. Students must participate in the counseling process to select their preferred top MBBS colleges in Karnataka. Government medical colleges generally have lower tuition fees, while private medical colleges have different fee structures depending on the college category and seat type.

The Karnataka MBBS admission process usually starts after the declaration of NEET results. The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts the counseling process for eligible candidates. The MBBS course duration in Karnataka is 5.5 years, including 4.5 years of academic study and 1 year of compulsory rotatory internship in affiliated hospitals.

Candidates should carefully check eligibility criteria, counselling schedules, seat matrices, fee structures, and college options before participating in the admission process to improve their chances of securing an MBBS seat in Karnataka.

KEA MBBS Counselling 2026 – Process, Dates & Rounds

MBBS admission in Karnataka is done through KEA MBBS Counselling, conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), Bangalore. KEA allots 85% of seats in government medical colleges (state quota) and 100% of seats in private medical colleges under the state quota. The remaining 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government colleges are filled separately by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at the national level. Only NEET UG-qualified candidates who register on the official KEA portal (cetonline.karnataka.gov.in) are eligible to participate in Karnataka MBBS counselling.

KEA MBBS Counselling Process — Step by Step

  • Registration: Register once on the KEA portal (cetonline.karnataka.gov.in). This single registration covers all rounds. Non-Karnataka students must also register here to be eligible for open-quota private seats.
  • Document Verification: Upload/verify documents. After verification you receive a Verification Slip containing your secret/security key — this is the single most important document in the process; do not share or lose it.
  • Choice Filling: Log in with your secret key and enter your preferred colleges and courses in priority order. You can add as many options as you like and reorder them before locking.
  • Mock Allotment: KEA publishes a mock result so you can see where your rank is likely to land. You can modify your choices after viewing it.
  • Seat Allotment (Round-wise): KEA releases the actual seat allotment result for each round based on NEET rank, category, reservation rules, preferences, and seat availability.
  • Reporting & Admission: Report to the allotted college with original documents within the deadline, pay the fees, and confirm your seat. Missing the reporting deadline forfeits the seat.

KEA MBBS Counselling Rounds

KEA conducts the Karnataka MBBS counselling in multiple rounds — typically Round 1, Round 2, a Mop-Up round, and a Stray Vacancy round — until all seats are filled. From recent sessions, candidates are usually asked to deposit a security amount before the second round; this is forfeited if they fail to join the allotted college. No seat surrender or cancellation is accepted after the mop-up round.

FAQs for MBBS in Karnataka

  • Yes — NEET UG is the only gateway. There’s no state-level entrance exam for MBBS in Karnataka. Whatever qualifying score you get in NEET, that’s what decides your fate here. You also have to pass Class 12 with physics, chemistry, and biology as core subjects, with at least 50% (40% if you belong to a reserved category of Karnataka domicile).
  • Age Limit: At least 17 years old by December 31st of the admission year.

Karnataka’s domicile rules can trip people up, so here’s a simple breakdown. You’re considered a Karnataka domicile student if you’ve studied in Karnataka for at least 7 continuous years at a recognized institution, OR you’ve passed your 11th and 12th in Karnataka and your parents also studied here for 7 years, OR you and both your parents are native speakers of Kannada, Tulu, or Kodava (you’ll need to appear for a language test in that case). Children of defense personnel who did their 11th and 12th in Karnataka also qualify. For more details, kindly check the KEA website.

Absolutely, Karnataka follows an open state policy with a 15% open quota for other state students. Students from any part of India can apply for Open Quota (OPN) seats in private medical colleges through KEA counseling. You don’t need Karnataka domicile for this. So if you’ve got a decent NEET score, Karnataka is genuinely worth considering.

Great question, because the seat type literally determines how much you pay and whether you’re eligible at all. Here’s the quick breakdown:

Government quota seats—only for Karnataka-domiciled students. Extremely competitive. Fees are a steal at around ₹64,000 to 153,571/year.

Open quota (OPN) — Open to students from any state. This is the one non-Karnataka students should target. Fees are around ₹12.00 lakhs per year.

General Merit Private (GMP) — Only for Karnataka domicile students in private colleges.

Management / NRI quota—Open to everyone, but fees jump dramatically to ₹25.00 lakh to ₹45.00 lakh per year.

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), which is in Bangalore, runs the entire KEA MBBS counselling process online at kea.kar.nic.in. KEA handles 85% of seats in government colleges and 100% of seats in private colleges (state quota). The remaining 15% All India Quota seats are handled separately by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at the national level. The counseling process has a few stages—registration and document verification, filling your college and course preferences, mock allotment (so you can see where you’re likely to land), and then the actual seat allotment. After that, you report to the allotted college with your originals to confirm the seat.

  • The MBBS admission process in Karnataka for 2026 will vary significantly depending on the type of college and the category of the applicant. For top government colleges like Bangalore Medical College, Mysore Medical College, and Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences, expect closing All India ranks in the range of top 5,000 to 14,000 and State Domicile All India Ranks nearby 25,000 to 40,000. Private colleges tend to have closing all-India ranks ranging from 25,000 to 110,000, depending on seat availability.
  • For non-domicile students targeting Open Quota seats in premium private colleges such as MS Ramaiah, Vydehi Institute, and Kempegowda Institute, you will typically need an All India Rank between 25,000 and 40,000.
  • Under Management Quota & NRI Quota All India Ranks go down due to high demand fees. For more details, you can contact us.
  • Private college fees vary widely based on the quota. For Open/State Quota seats allocated by KEA, fees are roughly ₹ 12.00 lakh to 13.00 lakh yearly.
  • For management quota, fees jump to ₹25.00 lakh–45 lakh per year.
  • NRI quota fees start from 30.00 lakh to 50.00 lakh per year. Over the 5.5-year course, total private college costs typically range between ₹25 lakhs on the lower end and ₹45 lakhs and above for management/NRI quotas.

Important: Some private colleges ask for a bank guarantee for future years’ fees upfront. This rule is sometimes challenged legally and varies by college—always ask before signing anything.

Here’s the full list so you can prepare in advance:

  • Completed KEA application form + fee payment receipt
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • NEET UG admit card + scorecard
  • Class 10 (SSLC) mark sheet
  • Class 12 (2nd PUC) mark sheet
  • Study certificate (showing 7 years of study in Karnataka, if applicable)
  • Caste / caste income certificate (if applicable)
  • Domicile certificate
  • NEET result / rank letter issued by NTA
  • Date of birth certificate (if not mentioned in Class 10 certificate)
  • HK eligibility certificate (if applying under HK quota)

After document verification, KEA will issue you a verification slip. This is arguably the most important document in the process, so don’t lose it.
